Favorite Movies

A few posts ago I asked what some of your favorite inspirational books are. Now I'm curious what some of your favorite movies are-- and why. A lot of my favorites are comedies. I also like a lot of romantic comedies. Here are some of my favorites (in no particular order):

1. Dodgeball - the characters are losers but lovable, and some of the lines/scenes are just absurd and funny because of the absurdity. It's a nice break from reality, and Ben Stiller's character is ridiculous.

2. So I Married An Axe Murderer- I find this movie quite funny. Sometimes that humor is quite subtle. But it reminds me of dating someone and always wondering what is going to turn out being horribly wrong about them. Every person I've dated has had some flaw (real or perceived). Sometimes it can be a perceived flaw that is something we know we can't live with, and this takes that to an extreme. Plus, a lot of Mike Meyer's characters in future movies are similar to his characters in this movie. His role as Charlie's father is great. I love quoting this one.

3. While You Were Sleeping- I love Sandy Bullock, especially in this movie. She's a dreamer, much like me. And sometimes you learn that your dreams are much better than reality. But she is a genuine character who appreciates those she meets in this movie and I really cheer for her to find that happiness. There is some good humor in this one as well.

4. The Emperor's New Groove- The humor in this movie is fantastic. And the subtleties really add to the story. The way the characters interact with each other and play off each other is a joy to watch. It's not too often that you find yourself rooting for bad guys and good guys alike.

5. Batman Begins & The Dark Knight- I really like what Christopher Nolan has done with the Batman movies. The characters have more depth and emotion, and you really get a chance to see another side of Batman and his enemies through these action-packed, suspenseful films. Heath Ledger really did an awesome job as Joker, also.

I have many more favorites, but those are all I'll list for now. I want to hear what some of your favorites are.

I suck at movie reviews because I really don't remember things very well. There are a few movies I remember pretty well.

1. Beauty and the Beast- my all time favorite. Joe likes to joke that it is the story of my life and that is why I like it so much. While that may or may not be true, I do love it for the lesson it teaches that what matters most is what is on the inside of a person and not what you see.

2. While you Were Sleeping- I also liked this movie. She thought she knew what would make her happy but learned that sometimes you need to be happy with what is right in front of you.

3. Serendipity- with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. If they were meant to be together destiny would help them find each other again. It is kind of like While You Were Sleeping.

4. The American President- with Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. Typical romantic comedy but there a couple of one lines that I really like in this movie.

I love movies! I’m a movie hound, but what a task to narrow it down. Hum…here’s a few of mine:

1. The Fall ~ I don’t think I’ve seen a movie this brilliant and exuberant in the past 10 years. Once in a blue moon a movie gets everything exactly right; from the writing, casting, score, costumes, direction, cinematography, blocking etc. and this was it.

2. Transformers ~ I’m like a little kid each time I watch this. It’s just fun and filled with action and brings me back to my childhood days.

3. Help! ~ Ah the Beatles in a wacky adventure. It’s like Monty Python but with better looking actors.

4. ~ Some Like It Hot – A classic! Men in drag and one of them falling for Marilyn Monroe, how can you go wrong?!

5. Benny and Joon ~ This is Johnny Depp at his best. I fell in love with him because of his character, Sam, which he played in the movie. Some of the best physical comedy is found in this film.

6. Gone with the Wind ~ I don’t know what it is about this film, but every time I’m flipping through the channels and see this, I’ll watch it. I think deep down inside, I somewhat want to be like Scarlett…determined yet fashionable.

7. Princess Bride ~ Hum…I yet to find someone that doesn’t enjoy this movie in some way.

OK, I can write a lot more, but I’ll keep it short.

The Emporer's New Groove is definitely up there for us..."Just one more for exotic bird bingo. I am lovin this!" "I said I was sorry. You can't just let it go, not even on your birthday." "Izma, put your hands in the air!" Another favorite scene is when Cronk goes into Izma's tent and screams at the frightening sight of her. You can see this is an oft watched and quoted movie in our family.
We also like While You Were Sleeping.
We LOVE Elf. "Santa!! I know him!" Soo good.
The Wedding Planner and The Wedding Singer are two of our favorite romantic comedies.
Some of Trav's favorites are Dumb and Dumber, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Goonies.
I personally, am a fan of the Jane Austin's, inc. Emma and Pride and Prejudice. Also, Emily Bronte's "Jane Eyre" (The Masterpiece theatre version). I also really like a foreign film called "Dear Frankie." And my favorite new movie is Penelope. Well, there you have it--our picks.

Nicole, I love reading your reviews. I keep thinking to myself, 'Dang, she watches a lot of movies!' and 'What a great idea!' I don't know how well I'd do at reviewing movies myself.

It's always interesting to me to see what movies others like. If I had posted some of my other favorites, they would've included a lot of the movies you guys posted.
