I took this recipe out of a copy of Reader's Digest some years ago. This recipe was posted as the best chocolate chip cookie recipe after a contest they'd had. I finally got around to making it, and now it's the only chocolate chip cookie recipe I make. We like to make some homemade ice cream and cut up some cookies and add them to the ice cream for some chocolate chip cookie ice cream- it's awesome.
Mom's Ultimate
1 cup soft butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 cup boiling water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 cups quick oats
12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
Cream butter, sugar together. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water, stir into butter/sugar mixture. Add vanilla, then dry ingredients and chips. Drop small balls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees F.
To save time, I usually just make this as cookie bars. Just as delicious either way. If you think it's too chocolaty for you, you don't have to add all the chocolate chips.

You sent out this recipe before and we tried and and my family liked it so much that it too has replaced all recipes in my house. I like it because it uses fewer ingred. and seems to be done a lot faster. Thanks for a winner of a recipe.
Do you have to add the oats? Because I don't believe that anything that even sounds healthy belongs in a cookie. Please answer, because I'm serious.
I've never tried it without the oats, so I don't know how that would turn out. But I PROMISE, there is nothing healthy-tasting about it. I even replaced about half the flour with wheat flour, and I couldn't taste a difference.
Sounds yummy, but almost too simple. And I'm going to try your 1/2 wheat flour trick and let Josh try them. If he approves, it'll become my standard as well.
